Michael O’Leary, who’s just completing his first year in the full-time MBA program, is among student leadersO'leary helping to make the UM MBA experience a real-world learning opportunity. As president of the School’s Marketing Club, he has brought in several speakers and organized a project developing a marketing plan for a local company that took part in a large music festival in Austin.

“I reach out to a lot of professionals in the city and set up meetings where they can teach/present/impart wisdom for the club members,” O’Leary says. “It’s a fun and interesting experience to hear from people of diverse backgrounds.”

O’Leary, who earned an undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan, came to the School of Business after working successfully in film and TV production. In fact, he won an Emmy award as part of a winning team of five producers of a 30-minute show entitled NASCAR: Beyond the Wheel. The show focuses on race recaps, history of the track, and the stories of different drivers. It won a Sports Emmy in early 2007 for its 2006 season. Other production work O’Leary has completed includes NASCAR-Driven to Win, which has been aired on A & E, the History Channel, and the Biography Channel.

O’Leary is now focused on succeeding in the UM MBA program and broadening his experience.

“It is important for me to diversify my work experience and education,” he says.

O’Leary has continued to utilize his background in production by producing some promotional videos for the UM Athletics department, which can be viewed at http://hurricanesports.cstv.com.

Up next for O’Leary is a summer internship with the AT & T Leadership Development Program, where he will work for AT & T Mobility doing product management for new ventures such as cell phone games and various other media. He will be instrumental in analyzing the new products’ success.

After graduation, O’Leary says he wants to work for a large company with diverse projects. He describes his ideal workplace as “a huge company that will have a presence in TV, print, public events, sponsorships, Internet, cell phones, everything! I want to work in a company that offers a lot.”
