School of Business Appoints Vice Dean of Faculty

Coral Gables, Fla. – March 20, 2008 – The University of Miami School of Business Administration today announced the appointment of A. Parasuraman as vice dean of faculty. In this newly created position, Parasuraman, professor and holder of the James W. McLamore Chair in Marketing, will play a key role in efforts to increase the school’s research productivity and build its reputation for research excellence. This includes facilitating the recruitment of senior faculty, leading a program to provide more research support to faculty, and overseeing the expansion of the school’s PhD program.

Parasuraman will lead a program to aggressively recruit senior professors across the school’s academic departments. He also chairs the committee that is developing the school’s new PhD program, which will launch in the fall.  The current PhD program, offered in economics, will be expanded significantly to include marketing, management, management science and finance over the next several years. A key goal is to attract the best PhD students from around the world.

“I look forward to helping the school attract high caliber PhD students who can collaborate with our faculty on cutting-edge research right from the beginning,” said Parasuraman. “Such collaboration will enable our PhD students to graduate with research published in major publications and then take positions with leading business schools, which will further enhance the reputation of UM’s School of Business,” said Parasuraman.

Parasuraman has held his position at the School of Business Administration since 1994. His teaching and research focuses on services marketing, service-quality measurement and improvement and the role of technology in marketing. Parasuraman was selected as one of the “Ten Most Influential Figures in Quality” by the editorial board of The Quality Review.  He has received numerous distinguished teaching and research awards, including the American Marketing Association’s “Career Contributions to the Services Discipline Award” and the Academy of Marketing Science’s “Outstanding Marketing Educator Award.” He has published more than 100 articles in leading journals such as the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Marketing Research, the Journal of Retailing, and Sloan Management Review. Parasuraman holds a DBA in marketing from Indiana University, an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management and a Bachelor of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology.
