Leadership Institute Launches New Programs under School of Business Administration

The Johnson A. Edosomwan Leadership Institute, now housed at the UM School of Business Administration, is launching an ambitious new series of programs, products and services. With initial funding from UM alumnus Johnson A. Edosomwan (BSIE ’79, MSIE ’80), the Institute was founded at the UM College of Engineering in 2006 as an interdisciplinary initiative to help identify, assist and mentor world-class leaders.

The Institute was moved to the School of Business Administration in 2008. Terri A. Scandura, dean of the Graduate School and professor of management, is the Institute’s new academic director. She has more than 20 years of experience as a top leadership researcher and instructor, and she has consulted and delivered executive education programs to numerous organizations, including United Distillers, American Bankers Insurance Group, Union Bank, Barnett Bank, Burger King, Mercedes Benz, Johnson & Johnson, Schering‐Plough Pharmaceuticals, Island Outpost Hotels, Miami Children’s Hospital, Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Lower Keys Medical Center, Jackson Memorial Hospital and Palm Beach Health Centers.

“We are not like leadership institutes at other universities,” says Scandura. “We are setting ourselves apart with innovative, interdisciplinary programs that are not offered elsewhere. UM also has expert faculty who know how to get high-level audiences to think outside the box. We intend to teach leadership in a very creative way.”

The Institute offers, or is planning, a variety of certificates, programs and events:

Institute faculty provides support for this 63-credit, dual-degree program offered in conjunction by the College of Engineering and the School of Business Administration.

Leadership Certificate Programs
A professional skill development track for leaders at all levels based on proven leadership practices from the best corporate, governmental, nonprofit and academic organizations. Current programs include “Developing Effective Leadership Skills,” an in-depth look at the essential elements of leadership; “Leading Teams,” the many aspects of team leadership; and “Leading for Innovation,” creating the proper environment for creativity to flourish. An additional program, “Leadership and Ethical Decision Making,” is under development.

Experienced Executive Development Program
A unique opportunity for C-level executives to hone their leadership skills and stay abreast of current world-class leadership tools and practices.

Conferences, Lecture Series and Workshops
Podcasts, lectures, workshops and other events in leadership best practices presented by top experts in leadership and management.

Leading-edge concepts, tools, techniques and best practices for leadership development in all disciplines and market sectors.

Contracts for Research
Research related to interdisciplinary leadership and executive development, much of it through funded grants and contracts from public and private-sector organizations.

Support, provided in collaboration with funding partners, for student research and education in the leadership arena.

Awards Program
Recognition of world-class thought leaders who demonstrate and exemplify excellence in the leadership field.

Founding sponsor and UM alumnus Johnson A. Edosomwan is chairman and senior executive consultant/coach for JJA Consultants, Inc.; the chairman and general manager of Johnson A. Edosomwan LLC; and group chairman for C.I.C. As an executive consultant to more than 6,000 public and private-sector organizations, he has completed more than 1,300 consulting projects, developed 630 performance improvement tools, and trained more 290,000 executives, leaders and professionals around the world. He is a pioneer in continuous performance improvement and the author of more than 325 papers and 66 books including, World-Class Leadership Competencies and One Race: Human Diversity Solutions. Edosomwan is the recipient of 175 awards, honors, citations, fellowships and commendations, as well as the holder of more than 16 certifications in several academic disciplines and four academic degrees from UM, Columbia University and George Washington University. The following awards were established by University of Miami in his name: the Johnson A. Edosomwan Productivity and Quality Scholarship Award, the Johnson A. Edosomwan Researcher of the Year Award and the Johnson A. Edosomwan Scholarly Productivity Award.
