Undergraduate Hyperion Council Continues to Make a Difference in Jamaica

One year after successfully creating and executing a program to assist Jamaican businesswomen, members of the School’s Hyperion Council continue to provide support and assistance as its Jamaica Project grows.

In July, 61 small and medium-sized enterprise owners and operators were certified in entrepreneurship at ceremonies in Kingston and Montego Bay. The ceremonies marked the end of an eight-week training program that was supported by materials developed by business students for last year’s Jamaica Project. Members of the Hyperion Council will be working with program participants this fall to answer questions and act as mentors as the new entrepreneurs apply new found business knowledge. The project was delivered by the Human Employment and Resource Training Entrepreneurial Skills Development Unit in collaboration with the Scotiabank Chair in Entrepreneurship and Development and the University of Technology, Jamaica.
The Hyperion Council is a student organization that focuses on developing projects to strengthen bonds between the local business and university communities. Each year, the council initiates projects that link the university to at-risk communities and promotes important business concepts including market economics, entrepreneurship, personal and financial success, and business ethics to better themselves, their communities and their countries.
