The School of Business welcomes more than 550 new students as the fall 2013 semester begins, including over 450 incoming undergraduate students representing 34 countries at their orientation on Aug. 23. Students were paired with their peer counselors and attended academic meetings with Dean Anderson and advisors before touring the business complex and visiting the Business Student Organization Fair in the De La Cruz Center.

Freshmen students begin their first semester with the innovative Management 100 course called the FIRST (“Freshmen Integrity, Responsibility and Success through Teamwork”) Step Program, which is designed to build esprit de corps throughout the business school and provide freshmen with opportunities to learn the interpersonal skills necessary to be successful in team environments.  The course utilizes interactive cases, exercises, and reading material focused on business ethics, social responsibility, and social entrepreneurialism. Upper class students work as teaching assistants with the teams in conducting engagement projects within the broader university and Miami communities.

New Graduate Students

Orientation began on Aug. 20 for the new full-time MBA class, which includes nearly 100 students from 19 countries. Activities ranged from workshops on ethics to sessions on business research, case learning and analysis, and working in teams. The orientation also included an introduction to the School’s Ziff Graduate Career Services Center, which provided new students with the opportunity to meet the center’s staff, learn about MBA clubs and organizations, and hear about an MBA course that helps students master real-world business skills. The new students also gained insight about the job search process from several current MBA students who reflected on their internship experiences.

The week of activities was capped off with an opportunity to meet and speak with the School’s dean, Gene Anderson, distinguished alumni, and faculty members at the Dean’s Closing Reception.
