Undergraduates Secure Spot in National Business Competition
March 29, 2012
Seven undergraduate students are headed to the national conference and competition of Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) in June. Livia Alvarez, Alicia Barroso, Brandon Eckford, Ana Gil, Jesus Martinez, Dominique Paul and Sean Wilson all qualified for nationals at the organization’s state competition in Tampa, March 15-18.
“I am proud of the accomplishments of our PBL chapter and very happy to see the members excited about attending nationals in Texas this summer,” said Barroso, the School’s PBL chapter president and state secretary.
Members of the School’s FBLA-PBL chapter also swept their regional competition in Davie, where they brought home 22 awards for the School in February.
“Those approaching nationals know that the stakes are higher, and are preparing with vigor for the upcoming challenge,” said founding chapter member, Chris Morgan.
The competitions also give students an opportunity to network with fellow competitors and attend panels with business professionals and entrepreneurs. Students graduating this spring found the panel on negotiating salaries and benefits particularly helpful. The team also left its mark by making sure another ‘Cane joined the state office team. Alvarez, who received the Edrie Kennedy Award for her first place performance in parliamentary procedures, was named state parliamentarian for the upcoming year.
FBLA-PBL is a national education organization that aims to help its more than a quarter million student members who are interested in business careers develop leadership, communication, and team skills, and network with others at the local, state and national levels. Barroso founded the School’s chapter last year. The founding members of the group brought home several awards from last year’s national competition.
