PhD Admissions Requirements

Admission to the PhD Program is conducted every year in the spring for classes to begin in the fall. Admissions for the next class will take place in the Spring semester for classes to begin in the Fall semester.

Fellowships are available to qualified PhD applicants. In order to be considered for admission into the PhD program in Economics with a Fellowship, the minimum requirements are: (1) the completion of the baccalaureate degree from a college or university of recognized standing; (2) the equivalent of a "B+" cumulative grade point average (GPA); and (3) a combined score of 1250 on the quantitative and verbal sections of the Graduate Records Examination (GRE). In addition, foreign students must score a minimum of 94 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) in order to be considered for admission (94 on internet based test, 240 on the computer based test, 600 on the written version).

The average combined verbal and quantitative GRE for the 2013 incoming class is 1423 and the average GPA for the incoming class is 3.53.

Transfer students

Transfer students are accepted into the PhD program. The guidelines set forth by the Graduate School are the criteria to follow for transfer of credits from accredited graduate institutions (see the Graduate Bulletin link).

Application deadline

PhD students, domestic and international, must submit all material on or before February 3rd, 2014. Decisions on admission and support are announced before April 15. All applicants not requesting a fellowship must submit all material before the deadline of February 3rd.

The application form, statement of purpose and letters of recommendation/forms should be submitted online. The code for ETS to directly send GRE and TOEFL scores is 5815.


Official transcripts and GRE and TOEFL test scores are essential in order to be considered for admission. Photocopies of these scores are not accepted. Please keep copies of all material you submit during the application process. The application and all supporting documentation become property of the Department and will not be returned. The admissions committee evaluates an application only after the file is complete with the following:

  • Online application form
  • An non-refundable fee of $65. A personal check or credit card payment for the exact amount of the fee, should be paid online in U.S. dollars.
  • An official transcript, copy of diploma and/or certificate is required from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended. These documents must be (1) submitted in the original language and (2) submitted by the Registrar's office of the issuing university. Additionally, documents in a language other than English must be accompanied by certified English translations. Notarized translations alone will not be accepted. Translations supplement, but do not replace, original documents. Please remember to send both. Transcripts should be sent directly from the issuing institution to:

  • Each applicant is required to submit at least three recommendations on the forms provided. Most applicants provide recommendations from a college instructor familiar with the applicant's academic work in areas closely related to the Economics field or other responsible persons well informed about relevant academic or research work the applicant has done. Recommendations should address the student's motivation, ability to conceptualize and deal quantitatively, and research potential.
